Matthew 17:20-21 Devotional

Faith has never been something easy to acquire. Doubt comes a lot easier to us. It is a lot easier to sit and sulk about all the things we cannot do. It’s easy to feel like we will never amount to what we hope to be. When life gets hard and we feel as though we have a mountain in front of us, we find it easy to sit at the foot of the mountain and doubt our ability to climb it. We list out all the reasons why we aren’t capable enough to make our way up the mountain. When we rely on only ourselves, we will never have to courage to start the climb. When we try to climb a mountain on our own, we will surely fail. Our own motivation will not sustain us on the journey up the mountain.

Matthew 17:20b-21 says, “For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

When we are stuck in a season of doubt, the Lord calls on us to trust in Him. He asks for us to have faith even if it is the size of a small mustard seed. Even if our faith is small, the Lord gives us the power to move mountains. He gives us the strength to sustain us through the trials.

It is quite easy to say we have faith and then live a completely different way. When we see mountains ahead of us, we cower before them thinking of all the reasons why we can not climb. But the Lord asks us to take a small leap of faith and to trust that through Him the mountain will move at His command.

When the mountains build and we have no courage to climb, the Lord will sustain us. We cannot hide in our doubts any longer. We worship a God who moves the mountains. We worship a God who fights our battles and will never lose. Through the Lord all things can be possible, all we need is step out with a faith the size of a mustard seed and mountains will move.

Next time you look at the Colorado skyline and see those alluring mountains, know that even with a little faith those mountains can move.
