Dorm Room Decor on a Dime
A huge part of moving away from home is making your cold, boring dorm room feel less, cold and boring, and more like a home for you to feel comfortable in. But I think it’s safe to say, doing that without zeroing out your account is impossible. Or at least it was until you read this article 😉
Yes, Target has some cute stuff for your room but realistically Target is too expensive to decorate your entire room for the average college student. And honestly that applies to a lot of places. It’s not easy making a room look cute without spending all the money you saved up over the last summer. It’s easy to get carried away. That’s why we’re here to help! There are so many creative alternatives to help you live in style for your next four years as a college student.
First, we all probably know of this, but thrifting is a huge hack. There are so many thrift stores in Lakewood alone that if you aren’t going to them, you’re basically robbing yourself. Additionally, ARC Thrift stores are 50% off every Saturday. Yes, the entire store is 50% off. You go from spending 5 dollars on a unique one of kind vase, to $2.50. Is that even legal in this economy? So much of your room décor can come from thrift stores. From frames, vases, artwork, baskets, to so much more. A lot of our students here at CCU can fill their living space with their own furniture. For those living in the Peaks and the Row you could easily find a couch or chair to add into your living room. The fun thing about thrifting is you can go in not knowing at all what you need and just look around to see what you can find.
If you don’t love coffee, then what are you doing?? Well for this next room décor hack you don’t necessarily have to like coffee. Sweet Bloom Coffee Roasters locally here in Lakewood gives out free coffee roasting bags (check out the photo below for inspo/reference). Some students here at CCU have taken these bags they got from Sweet Bloom and hung them up on their walls. They are larger in size, so they take up a good amount of wall space, filling it perfectly. Did I mention they are FREE!?
Finding your creative side when it comes to decorating a dorm room on a budget is vital. A few examples of what this can look like is painting records. This hack goes hand in hand with thrifting. You can find old records in thrift stores or vintage stores and most of the time they are reasonable. Just get out your old paints and paint brushes, tap into your creative side, and paint away.
Some important tips to remember when you start to decorate your place. Mixing and matching different artwork and pictures you thrift or paint yourself is the perfect way to create a collage wall, but don’t overdo it to the point it feels like clutter. Spacing things out and keeping an overall theme is a good thing to keep in mind, but never be afraid to show your style. There are so many creative ways to make a dorm feel like a home, don’t be afraid to try new ways to get your room feeling cozy.
Making your new living space in college doesn’t have to be a financial burden, but, at the end of the day it’s just a room. The most important part is the relationships and memories you make along the way.
